Américain. Né à Louisville. Adopte le nom d’Olu Dara en 1969. Famille : père (voc), oncles (minstrels), grands oncles (Rabbit’s Foot & Silas Green shows), fils Nasir Jones (rap). Etudes : p, cl, cnt (à 7 ans) ; son professeur lui a dit qu’il n’avait pas besoin de travailler. Expérience : Tennessee State Univ. Marching Band, Navy Band (1959-64), Freddie Waits , Horace Silver, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers (1974), Oliver Lake, Hamiett Bluiett, Sam Rivers, John Newton, Don Pullen, Brass Proud (1978), David Murray (1981), Okra Orch., Natzchezsippi Dance Band, Charles Brackeen, Cassandra Wilson. Egalement voc. Joue cnt, tp de poche. Musicien free et blues. ‘Olu can play with one note what most people can only play in a whole solo.
