Kid Sheik

Américain. Né à New Orleans, décédé à Detroit. Ce n’est qu’en 1963 qu’il obtient des papiers d’identité (pour un passeport) qui indiquent son nom Cola et non Colar. Famille : soeur Mabel Carter (voc, gospel, disque NoLa LP 11), épouse Sadie Goodson-Cola (p, voc). Etudes : p avec ‘Mamie’ Roach, dm (1920), puis tp, Wooden Joe Nicholas (1924), Chris Kelly (1924), George McCullum (v1925), Louis Dumaine ; à l’armée (1943-5 : harmonie, arrangement -pendant 3 ans). A partir de 1966 la musique a suffi à ses besoins. A utilisé l’emb. Rudy Mück. Franc-maçon. Représentant d’un style de jazz trad. simple, issu des harmonies (brass bands) : ‘his distinctive style is partly formed by his technical deficiences and although he plays with quiet conviction he lacks the raw force to turn these deficiences into virtues of a primitive kind’ (Ch. Hillman), ‘his most easily enjoyed work is perhaps on Icon session featuring the freegrant first and last recorded appearence of the late Steve Angrum on clarinet. Cola compares very favorably with Punch Miller, who also took part, less brilliant but also less erratic’ (Ch. Hillman).
